It took us a while to gather our thoughts around Sant'Egle. It is one of those places you can talk about for days, however we realised that certain things cannot be explained: they can be only seen, felt, experienced. In your nose, on your skin, with your eyes.
We are huge lovers of silence. Especially on holidays. This doesn't mean we only travel mountain tops or underwater locations, on our own with no contact with the outside world. However, over the years, we learnt to cherish silence amongst other things. That unique "sound" to rest our busy minds, to collect our thoughts, to search for clarity.
We arrived at Sant'Egle after a long day on the road. Tuscany is one special place: it has the power to make you forget where you are, but most importantly, it has the ability to make you loose the perception of time. We arrived in Sorano late in the afternoon and then carried on a side road, trying our best to not get lost, again.
Sant'Egle is at the bottom of a hill, and when the landscape opens up, it is absolutely breathtaking. Green fields, an old cobblestone house with good old stories to share, trees, and sweet Gina and Olivia (the two English Cocker Spaniels) giving us their first welcome.
If there is one thing that we learnt during our travel, is that a place can be beautiful, but are the people and their stories that truly makes it memorable.
Erika and Alessandro both lived in big cities before deciding that the crowded life wasn't for them. They wanted to live in a place where they could have a healthy and happy lifestyle, where their choices could make a difference, for themselves and for others. "Passionate dreamers and craftsmen of the earth" is how they define themselves.
The passion for their land is inspiring and there is no compromise when it comes to the quality of their products. They discovered how to grow fruits and vegetables in an organic, bio-dynamic and bio-synergic way. What does it mean? It means no harmful chemicals are used, but also they follow the seasons and use the sun to do the hard work. They do not interfere with nature, she knows what to do, pick fruits and vegetables at their peek, aim for the best product, regardless of what the market dictates.
If you are wondering, yes you can go stay and spend as much time as you want at Sant'Egle. The historic mansion is from the 17th centuries, when it provided refreshments for those travelling through the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to the Papal State. It is now 100% eco-friendly: the energy used comes from renewable sources, everything you eat comes either from Sant'Egle, or from organic farms in the area.
The list of what you can do in the area is long, and we may leave it for another time. This is just a brief introduction, one that should make you want to know more. For now, enjoy the pictures and the amazing taste of their products, here in our shop. There are more coming soon!
